CHAIRMAKING CLASS DESCRIPTIVE OUTLINE

The basic class schedule is as follows:


Sunday afternoon: General orientation, paperwork, tool sharpening techniques and actual tool sharpening.

Monday: Rive log or spoke for spindles, rive spindles, rough out spindles, and start drying process.

Tuesday: Rive bow, rough out bow, steam bend bow, and start drying process for bow.

Wednesday: Basic turning techniques - double bobbin legs and stretchers. Turn green hard (sugar) maple legs and stretchers and start drying process for them. Glue up seat blank.

Thursday: Mark up, drill, and carve seat, also do final shaping of spindles.

Friday: Final shaping of bow, final drying of legs and spindles, assemble seat with legs and spindles.

Saturday: Final assembly - fit bow to chair base and spindles. Demonstration of application of milk paint.

Sack Back Chairmaking Class follows similar processes as outlined above with the addition of riving, bending, shaping, and fitting of the arm bow.
