Class Description


Students will construct a bow back Windsor chair using mainly hand tools. The legs will be turned on a lathe. The process will include riving green wood for the bow and spindles, steam bending the bow, shaping the bow and spindles using hand tools, turning the legs on the lathe, and shaping the seat using hand tools. Materials and tools will be supplied for use in this course.

Instruction begins on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., continues Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and ends Saturday when the chair is finished.

The basic class schedule is as follows:

Sunday afternoon: General orientation, paperwork, tool sharpening techniques and practice on sharpening drawknife, rive spindle stock from log or spike, begin roughout spindles using shaving horse and sharpened drawknife.

Monday: Finish roughing out spindles, start drying process on spindles, rive, rough out, and steam bend bow.

Tuesday: Basic turning techniques-turn double bobbin legs, mark-up, drill and carve seat, begin drying process on leg tenons, practice sharpening spoke shave, begin final shaping of dry spindles with spoke shave.

Wednesday: Fit legs in seat, measure for and turn stretchers from green or seasoned hard maple and start drying, finish up carving on seat, finish shaping spindles.

Thursday: Catch up day.

Friday: Shape and smooth bow with spoke shaves, rasps, files, scraper and sandpaper, final drying of stretchers, assemble seat with legs and spindles.

Saturday: Final assembly, level chair, remove protruding leg tenons, fit spindles and bow to chair using brace, bit, wedges, demonstration of application of milk paint.
